Choosing The Right Golf Driver
Choosing The Right Golf Driver
The right driver may not necessarily be from your favorite manufacturer because it’s the club that makes the golfer not the other way around. Not every driver is perfect for every golfer; there is no one size fits all.
A driver is the golf club in the bag that offers distance from the fairway or tee.
The best way to start choosing the right driver is by testing them. Golf stores and pro shops will let you test various models from manufacturers. Testing several different brands and styles will allow you to get a better feel for various grips, shafts, and design differences.
Finding the right golf club depends on looking at features including the club head, the shaft, and the length. A golf driver’s club head is generally made out of titanium or various cutting edge materials. Composite materials are some of the latest materials used to make the club head.
Recently in a partnership with Lamborghini, Callaway Golf Company created a material they used in their new line called Forged Composite. This material is claimed to be lighter and stronger than Titanium allowing their clubs to be even more advantageous to golfers. The club head weight is based on a golfers handicap. A lower handicap golfer should choose a heavier club and vice versa.
A lighter club allows a more accomplished golfer faster swing speeds. The angle of the club determines the loft and trajectory you will receive off shots. The higher the angle the higher the loft. The shaft of the club should be at a length that is comfortable for you. The standard 3 lengths include traditional, mid-length, and long. Some retailers will talk to the manufactures and get this length adjusted for you if you don’t fit the standard sizes.
If a retailer doesn’t offer this option use a club fitter to either add or shorten the length of the club. If you have a club that is too long or short you loose substantial control on your shots. Club shafts are made from either steel or graphite. Steel makes the clubs stronger, more durable, and less expensive. However, more experienced golfers prefer graphite because it offers a lightweight club, with control, and less vibrations after contact.
After sifting through these options you should be able to narrow down the best drivers for your set of skills. A golf driver is one of the few clubs today that can still be vastly improved by new technology. It is advantageous for golfers to carry an updated driver in their bag to be able to keep up with other players.
