Goose hunting tips

February 28th, 2010

South Dakota goose hunting has been good for years now. The first year I lived in Lake Preston, SD I was amazed at the numbers of geese and ducks flying overhead for days at at a time. Fall migration of waterfowl from Canada filled the sky with more flocks and birds than I could have ever counted. South Dakota goose hunting is great in both the fall and the spring.

SD has a spring goose hunting season for snows, blues and ross’ geese. The 2010 spring season for snow geese is from February 13, 2010 through May 2nd and again this year the hunting is expected to be excellent. Snow goose hunting has been excellent for more than a few years now and daily limits are common.

This hunting tips page of the hunting SD site is for misc items and interests that don’t fit well anywhere else on the site. Everything on this page will be hunting related, whether it be books, equipment or even a friendly site or hunting site with information you might be able to use.

The one thing I can tell you is these are all reliable sites and the hunting information will always be above average. If you see something about hunting you think others might like send me an email or post it on the hunting forum because it’s always good to improve the hunting tips we can provide for you.

Fishing hunting lakes and walleye fishing techniques

February 28th, 2010

This walleye fishing article is a guest article. It’s pretty good walleye info and it’s also obvious the person is from Minnesota. Lol, the walleye fishing lake that’s the walleye capital of Minnesota is Mille Lacs. I’ve fished it hundreds of times for walleyes. For many years it was known as the dead sea but after some radical new fishing rules walleye fishing is now really hot. Anyway, here’s the walleye article and some walleye fishing techniques.

Fishing is a sport that most people have tried at least once in their lives. It seems that no matter where you live there is some type of fishing available; whether it is freshwater, deep sea, stream or pond. The techniques that are used vary greatly, as well as the equipment that is needed. The equipment and techniques depend upon the species that is being fished. My husband and I do a great deal of freshwater fishing. I love the action of fishing for pan fish and bass, but you cannot beat walleye fishing for the great tasting fillets.

South Dakota Fishing is proud to be able to tailor the search results with hunting, fishing, boats, and lakes have the most emphasis. That means if you do a search for “bass” you shouldn’t get any “bass speakers” back in the results, or at least not as many. Bottom line is when you’re searching for fishing hunting lakes or boating items or information you have a better chance of getting what you are looking for.

The NFL Quarterback Big Salaries

February 11th, 2010

The particular Bay Area quarterbacks — who are admittedly a bay away through the first-rate slingers of the actual NFL, such as Drew Brees and Peyton Manning — had comparable statistics in 2008. Both thrown 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Hill completed 181 of 288 passes for 2,046 yards; Russell linked on 198 of 368 passes for 2,423 yards.

The bargain-priced overall performance made Hill the 13th most cost-effective quarterback within the NFL, ahead of Brees and Peyton, at least when it comes to dollars and overall performance, in accordance to a recent bizjournals research of pay levels and on-field performances.

Russell finished at No. 24, also ahead of Brees and Manning — and even Super Bowl winner Ben Roethlisberger and on-again, off-again retiree Brett Favre of the Minnesota Vikings.

But who was the best bargain in the Bay? J.T. O’Sullivan, a backup quarterback for the 49ers, who finished at No. 7, mostly because of his $491,000 income.
Bench warmer-turned-mutimillionaire

Yet none of these types of quarterbacks can compare to former New England Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel, who turned his backup-turned-starter performance straight into the lucrative six-year, $63 million long term contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Previous year, Cassel’s job was to ride the actual bench as the backup for Tom Brady, that had directed the Patriots to 3 Super Bowl championships since 2001. Their relative significance had been reflected within their own paychecks: Brady would end up being paid much more than $14 million in salaries and bonuses, Cassel $539,140.

However Brady experienced a season-ending knee injury in the very first game of 2008, pushing Cassel into the starting role, where he did unexpectedly good. He completed 327 passes for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns, leading the Patriots to 11 wins as well as five losses.

That made Cassel one of the top NFL quarterback big salaries in 2009 big salaries in 2009, in accordance to the bizjournals study.

Bizjournals analyzed nfl quarterback earnings of almost all 36 NFL players that threw at least 160 passes during the 2008 typical season. The actual highest scores went to quarterbacks, such as Cassel, that delivered huge results on the field while drawing relatively small salaries. Nevertheless, the study does not include fan appeal or the ever-important Super Bowl rings.

Each quarterback’s income cap value, described as his base salary plus pro-rated bonuses, was coordinated against his performances in 4 statistical categories: completions, yards, touchdowns and interceptions. (Salary cap values are yearly collected and reported by USA Today.)

The stats with regard to every player were converted to ratios, such as completions per $100,000 of salary cap worth. Above-average ratios (more completions, yards or touchdowns, and fewer interceptions) received positive standing on the cost-effectiveness scale, while below-average numbers were scored negatively.
Chiefs’ high-performing duo

Cassel as well as Tyler Thigpen of the Kansas City Chiefs emerged as the NFL’s 2 most cost-effective quarterbacks. They earned 6.79 and 6 points, respectively, on bizjournals’ level. Trent Edwards of the Buffalo Bills had been a distant third along with 2.56 points.

Seattle had the actual minimum top NFL quarterback top salaries for 2009, Matt Hasselbeck, who was affected with back and knee injuries last season. Hasselbeck, who was paid $9.95 million, missed a number of games. This individual threw only 209 passes, completing 109 for 1,216 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Hasselbeck’s percentages associated with 1.1 completions, 12.2 yards and 0.1 touchdowns per $100,000 had been the worst in those 3 categories among the 36 quarterbacks in the study.

The actual research did not contain anyone who attempted fewer than 160 passes, a good average of 10 per game. Dropping short of that threshold had been three of the NFL’s 10 highest-paid quarterbacks, all of who had been shelved with injuries: Brady (cap value of $14.6 million), Carson Palmer of Cincinnati ($14 million) and Alex Smith of San Francisco ($9.9 million).

Used Boats and Fishing Knives

January 22nd, 2010

Buying an used boat could have its advantages but also some disadvantages. There are a lot of specialized site that presents a variety of used boats from which you can choose. You can find them at low prices starting a couple of thousand dollars, depending on the size you wish.

One of the advantages in buying a previous-owned boat is the fact that you could even negotiate the price. Some examples of used boats are: the Homecruiser, priced at 495,000 dollars, ideal for a cruise with your family, the sailing boat Catamaran Imp 45ft By Sun Yachts, priced at 55,0000 dollars, jet skis like Sea Doo Utopia 185 Jet Boat, at $33,500 and so on. All negotiable.

If you are a connoisseur in terms of boats then it will be easy to choose. If not here are some tips in buying used boats. First of all you should know that it’s not like buying a used car.

There are a number of fishing knives available depending on the type of fisherman you are. Having the right kind of knife that will withstand a variety of elements is important. If you tend to be constantly reaching or going to your tackle box consider purchasing a pocket knife that you can have with you at all times. Perhaps carrying a fixed blade knife in a sheath looped through your belt will help in that situation. (although to some a knife carried like this is uncomfortable at times) You will want to consider whether it is a fillet knife or bait knife you need. I prefer having multiple fishing knives. When choosing a fishing knife the size of the fish being lured needs to be considered.

First lets talk about a bait knife or an all purpose knife that is helpful not only for cutting and preparing bait, but is also helpful in general fishing duties, like cutting and rigging your line. I know Buck knives makes a good, rather inexpensive bait knife, the Buck Silver Creek Bait Knife. Consider some of the features about this particular knife and others made just like it. The stainless steel blade has a corrosion gray titanium coat, which helps resist rust when encountering a lot of water. The blade is plain with a serrated spine which really helps when you have to cut through bone. (Which you know if you are cutting your own bait this happens all the time.)

These are all great places in South Dakota and I’ve used the vast majority of them at one time or another. The GF&P website is filled with information for you and is a great resource.

Best Rifle for Deer Hunting

January 18th, 2010

Picking the right or best rifle for deer hunting is very important because it can make or break the hunt itself. You never know what problems may arise from having the wrong rifle at the hunt, so ensure that you have taken the time to pick the best rifle for deer hunting or whatever other big game you may be hunting.

There are a number of areas that should be explored as you try to figure out the best rifle for your hunting. As you grow as a hunter and learn more, you’ll be able to make your own decisions in terms of picking a rifle your hunting. For now, however, it is likely best that you consider an expert opinion.

Whitetail deer and deer hunting are a dangerous topic in some places but not in South Dakota. Hunters love deer and want to be able to hunt them. Non hunters love deer and don’t want hunters to hunt them. Small problem when the two groups meet.

Whitetail deer hunting in SD is almost always good, every year. I see so many dead deer laying alongside the interstates it makes me thing a guy should just put his hunting stand at the edge of the cornfield by the interstate.

Eastern SD is whitetail hunting mostly altho a mule deer will get lost and be found in the eastern part of the state and sometimes into Minnesota. Mule deer hunting takes place in Western SD and there is a lot of western South Dakota public hunting ground for your hunting trip.

Hunting tips and firearm safety

January 17th, 2010

Every year, hundreds if not thousands of hunting accidents happen across the country; just ask Vice President Dick Cheyney. Most of these would not have happened if people had just practiced a few basic firearm safety techniques.

Know your weapon or firearm
Read your firearms owner’s manual from cover to cover so you thoroughly know your gun. You should also practice taking apart your shotgun or rifle and inspect it thoroughly.

If you learn to do that and what your weapon looks like normally, it will be easy for you to recognize any abnormalities of the gun in the field. If you get clumsy drop your weapon or fall with it it, immediately take it apart and check it for damage. Make sure that the slide and everything else operates smoothly. If you have any doubts about your shotgun or rifle, don’t fire it.

Rifles, shotguns and hunting safety tips
Your hunting rifles, shotguns and pistols are very dangerous so please read these hunting tips for safety in the field.

Hunting has survived even tho we have gotten modernized and no longer have to rely on hunting skills to eat. It has become one of the worlds most popular pastimes and hobbies. However hunting can also be one of its most dangerous. Every hunter should have some basic knowledge before heading out into the field.

The most important tip I know is never hunt when you are intoxicated or drinking. The next most important hunting tip is about how to walk and carry a gun. It is important to make sure that the muzzle of your gun always points away from you and any others with you. There are many ways to do this.

Northern Pike Techniques and Fishing Hunting Lakes

January 17th, 2010

Northern Pike Techniques

Gone fishing - that’s where I usually was. In the fall it was gone to fish for walleyes and northerns. Anything else we caught was an accident. Here another of the tips or techniques for newbies to catch big northerns.

One day my dad heard the northerns were biting on a small, hard to get to, out of the way, little lake that was back in the middle of a cow pasture. The road to the fishing lake was more of a trail and it’s a good thing I had a pickup as my car wouldn’t have made it back in there.

We were the only people there and I picked a spot on a small point where an arm of water that wandered back into the pasture started. It was fall and I figured the northers might be going into the shallows on the arm to bask in the sun and then come back to the deeper water to feed.

South Dakota lake maps and lake view real estate

December 30th, 2009

Lake Thompson in South Dakota is one of the premier fishing lakes around and has a very nice state recreation area where you can rent RV and camping spaces. They also have some small cabins for rent.

If you are looking for South Dakota land for sale you can take a look at this link. I know this guy personally and have bought and sold houses and land using his services. He’s a great guy and will work hard to find what you are looking for. SD land for sale and lake real estate.

I know from when I looked for lake property and lake cabins for sale in Minnesota and South Dakota that Reed will be able to help you. He can also point you to a realtor in MN that should be able to help if you are looking for some lakefront property there.

I wanted to be on a lake that was great for fishing. Particularly for northerns, walleyes and perch. Thompson is a great lake for those and crappies and smallmouth bass.

It’s also a natural lake instead of a reservoir. The water level came up in the 80’s when they had some really wet years. A lot of farmland got flooded so it has lots of structure, stock damns, sunken trees and trees standing in the water so South Dakota lake maps are really useful.

There are parts of it where you can fish sand, mud, gravel or rocks. It’s a real snag filled lake and most people have the best luck with bottom bouncers. Lol, I even lost a lot of tackle fishing from my dock.

Lake thompson is big too. Somewhere around 17-18000 acres or so. Depends on the water levels. It was so big that one of the first things I did was get a map. I looked at the South Dakota GFP map but it didn’t have enough detail so I got one from the bait shop in Lake Preston.

Whitetail deer hunting and how to skin a deer

December 30th, 2009

How to skin a deer is something you really need to know before you go deer hunting. The following instructions on how to skin a deer should get you started off in the right direction. It’s not all that hard to do but the easiest way to skin a deer is to have a friend do it for you.

While it may not be the most exciting job in the world, skinning a deer is important when returning from a hunt or when still actually on the hunt. If you have taken down the deer, elk, antelope or goat of your dreams in a hunting adventure, you will need to know how to skin the deer and how to get the most out of your kill. If you are just learning about hunting, this information will also be incredible handy for that remarkable day on which you will finally be able to skin a deer.

Whitetail deer and deer hunting are a dangerous topic in some places but not in South Dakota. Hunters love deer and want to be able to hunt them. Non hunters love deer and don’t want hunters to hunt them. Small problem when the two groups meet.

Northern pike fishing tips to catch bigger fish

December 30th, 2009

Big fish are a lot more fun to catch than little fish. At least they are for me. I’d much rather catch a 10# walleye than a limit of 1 1/2 to 2 pound walleyes.

Catching big fish isn’t the easiest thing in the world but you can maximize your chances of catching bigger fish just by going to a lake that is noted for big fish.

Asking at your local bait shop is one of the easiest ways to find lakes with big fish but there is another method that works even better. More on that in a minute. Pay attention to the big fish pictures at any bait shop you go into. If they have the lake where they were caught it makes it a lot simpler. How to catch bigger fish will not be a problem if you follow these great fishing tips.

Start keeping track of the lakes where the big fish come from. If you’re like me you get to quite a few baitshops in a year and you should be able to put quite a few lakes into your notebook. The more baitshops with pics of big fish from the same lake the better off you will be. Fish those lakes for those species.

These northern pike fishing tips are primarily for fall northern pike fishing. For me fall northern fishing was always better than spring fishing. Doing most of my northern fishing in MN, with their late opening season, generally the big northerns were already in deeper water by the time the season opened. At least in Southern MN.

I’m going to assume you have some knowledge about fishing for northerns but I’ll give a couple of the techniques I use and some tips on what I look for when fishing northerns in the fall.

As far as northern pike fishing lures goes I liked a large red daredevle, a fluorescent orange and gold daredevle, a magnum floating rapala, musky lures like a suick or a musky spinner. Big lures were good lures and still are under the right circumstances. However I will say that he majority of my big northerns have come on bait and not northern pike lures.

South Dakota Fishing Forums and Freshwater Fishing Blog

December 10th, 2009

This is a freshwater fishing blog. Just one of many fishing blogs on the net but I hope it becomes one of the better fishing blogs on the net. For me it’s a natural to have a blog about fishing and it fits right in with this site and it’s hunting and fishing forums.

Fishing is my favorite sport. I suppose I should say fresh water fishing is my favorite outdoors sport as I don’t particularly like ocean fishing. Then again I’m not much on river fishing either. Probably because I learned to fish in freshwater lakes and that’s where I’ve done the bulk of my fishing.

What’s my favorite fish to catch? When I’m fishing whatevers biting becomes my favorite fish. Sure, I start out fishing for walleyes or northerns but if I find the crappies are biting good I’ll switch to crappies. Having a love for catching as well as fishing I go with what’s biting the best.

Summer fishing and ice fishing in eastern South Dakota. Fishing information for lakes Thompson, Henry, Whitewood, Sinai, Dry and many other good fishing lakes in the Lake Preston area. If the fish are biting in eastern SD we have the fishing information you need.

Whatever you are fishing for we do have info on the fish. From walleyes, northerns, perch, crapies and bass you can find the fishing information you need here. You can also buy and sell fishing or outdoors related items and post any information you may have about tournaments or fishing seminars in the South Dakota Fishing Forums.

Fresh water lake fishing tips

December 3rd, 2009

I have a lot of fresh water lake fishing tips to come in this series on freshwater lakes, rivers and ponds.

I’ve been fishing a freshwater lake, or at least going to the lake since I was about 2 months old and I know I was fishing as soon as I could walk and demand my own pole. Lol, half of you won’t even know what this is but it was about a 10 foot long cane pole that I was given to fish with. Lot’s of adults used 15 to 20 foot cane poles for fishing back then. As much as I hate to admit it that was around 1949.

I’ve loved the freshwater lakes and fishing since I was a baby and would still rather spend time at the lake. My grandparents were ardent fisher people and so was my father. Some of the tips I know come from them, some I learned from pro fishermen or guides and others I learned on my own. I love to fish and this is the best time of year because I can also get in some good hunting,

If you are interested in South Dakota pheasant hunting around the Watertown, Brookings, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Huron, Madison or Lake Preston areas you should check out this hunting board. You can post your good or bad luck hunting, ask questions about hunting from our knowledgeable members and find what areas have been hot lately or what areas they expect to be hot.

There are abundant pheasants in the area and the Lake Preston DeSmet area is on of the major duck and geese flyways in the area. Pro guides bring their clients to this area to hunt and pheasant, ducks and goose success is phenomenal most of the time. Toni at the Lake Preston motel or Bo from the Bait Box in Lake Preston can tell you where it’s best.

Belly Putters Improve Your Game

October 28th, 2009

The Belly Putter is longer than a regular putter and is used to help force the golfer into the correct putting stance.

It does this by the fact that during the putt, the butt end of the belly putter stays in contact with the golfer’s body at the abdomen. Putting in this way helps create a pendulum swing. Using a belly putter will increase the golfer’s confidence and train the body to maintain that perfect putting stance. The golfer has the option of just using the belly putter for all putts or only using it as a training aid and then going back to a regular putter at some point.

Belly putters have help win tournaments and will improve your putting game.

To learn more about belly putters and to read the buying guide go to www.BellyPutter.net.

Hunting Check List
