Surfing the Sport Of Kings

August 31st, 2010

The sign of a good surfer is that he is able to catch the wave before other surfers can. Beginners find it difficult to catch the wave at all. Once the wave is caught, the surfer can stand on the surfboard and stay in front of the curl of the wave, also known as the white water. The wave carries the surfer and takes him in a forward direction. A skilled surfer is able to take total charge of a challenging situation and at the same time maneuver like curving or turning. Some tricks practiced by experienced surfers are floater, cutback, air and off the lip. The most difficult trick is the surf inside the tube formed by the closed curl of the wave.

To surf in colder regions, its advisable to wear wetsuits, boots, gloves and hood to protect from cold-water temperatures, which can sometimes lead to hypothermia. You may also need a cure for tinnitus if you have swimmers ear. There are different styles of boards like egg or the long board style short board, fish or short and wide board with a split tail and gun with a long pointed board meant for big waves.

Traditional rock climbing terms

August 26th, 2010

There are many variations to the traditional rock climbing. They can be broadly classified into free climbing and aid climbing. Climbers do not use any kind of equipment in free climbing and in aid climbing; equipments are used to support the weight of the body against the rocks, which have less natural formation.

A climber should be mentally and physically be strong to overcome difficulties and having extensive knowledge can make the task easier. If you cannot sleep, do not dare do this. Initially the climbers can learn in pairs, while one learns to climb the other can belay or feed the rope from either end of the rock structure. In case the climber falls, the belayer can lock off the rope. When multiple climbers climb, the leader can connect a rope with carabiners or quickdraws as a protection measure. A more risky method, simul-climbing, involves the leader and the team members to move at the same time, giving less time to belay the rope.

Northern pike techniques and fishing with GPS

August 26th, 2010

One day my dad heard the northerns were biting on a small, hard to get to, out of the way, little lake that was back in the middle of a cow pasture. The road to the fishing lake was more of a trail and it’s a good thing I had a pickup as my car wouldn’t have made it back in there.

We were the only people there and I picked a spot on a small point where an arm of water that wandered back into the pasture started. It was fall and I figured the northern pike might be going into the shallows on the arm to bask in the sun and then come back to the deeper water to feed. Check out the northern pike techniques to learn how many we caught.

Fishing GPS is so prevalent in this day and age, you’d be hard pressed to find a fishing boat without some sort of fish finding device. Fishing with GPS devices has become the latest in technology and water safety when it comes to fishing. They are used as a means of navigation and a way to mark your spot so that you can find it again in the future.

A GPS is a Global Positioning System that is made primarily for navigational purposes. They work off a network of satellites that are placed into orbit by the United States Government. The best part about a GPS system is that because they operate off satellite, they can be used in any weather conditions at any hour of the day.

The best of shooting tips calls for you to treat shooting as an experience

August 17th, 2010

You might think that shooting tips only instruct you on how to be a better shot, and to an extent this is true; but being a good shot is not all there is in the enjoyment of marksmanship. Like most hobbies, so too with marksmanship, you take it up for the enjoyment of the activity. Firing a rifle, pistol, or shotgun is, first and foremost, an experience.

Not all that we are conscious of constitutes an experience. Most of the time, we float through time, not in a doldrum, but carried along at a steady pace, through straits we have traversed over and over again, landscapes that have taken their places in the blurry background of the ordinary and the common. We live in a well-regulated world, a world of cyclic repetitions, and as the years mount, the cycles seem to run, one into the other, so that what was at first a new beginning, becomes in time the familiar landmark of a cycle we barely recognize anymore. What was at first a victorious, glorious end, through repetition, becomes the expected, the necessary, the suspense that once fueled our imagination now a mist. If we are able to interweave all the strands of life into a smooth and flattened fabric, our lives become an unending shroud of blandness and boredom, until we softly fade into the oblivion over which we had always seemed to wave like a sleepy banner in a limpid breeze. Yes, we experience our lives–consciousness of something is experience—but this is not what we mean by an experience here. Shooting, unlike the rest of our lives, is an experience. The cardinal tip of all shooting tips is to regard shooting as a special experience.

Shooting is something exceptional, an event, a series of moments that are raised above the commonplace, that stand out shining by its own internal light, its own drama, its own life. Shooting is a mini-drama, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Other advisors giving out shooting tips may not emphasize this, but without this principal, shooting will become as common as you daily commute to work, a bore.

Take note of each phase of the experience. In the beginning, when you first grasp your rifle’s stock, you’ll notice that it’s warm and feels smooth like sun-tanned skin, and, if it’s wood, it will feel soft and alive, like the trunk of a young tree. When you wrap your hand around the metal barrel, you’ll be mildly startled by its coolness as it contrasts sharply with the stock. You’ll sense its power in its weight as you lift it up. Slip your arm like a snake along the strap (shooting tips for aim alone instructs you to use the strap to help you steady your aim), and take note how your breathing becomes slower, as if your lungs know the play has begun. Slowly, always slowly, lift the rifle up and set your cheek against the stock, as if against a lover’s cheek. Close one eye, and look along the sights. Fix your aim. The drama has begun.

In the middle now, hold your breathe—-another common rule among shooting tips—and when you have steadied your aim, slowly pull the trigger. The recoil brings you to the end. If you’ve hit the target as you expected, a comedy of joy is the result, a miss is a tragedy.

Always approach shooting as the exciting experience that it is. Savor every action, every pause as you would a drama, a concert, a walk through an art museum. Shooting is art, and you are both artist and audience. Shooting is an experience.

Marathon Running Training

June 29th, 2010

You’ve probably noticed how the women often prefer women doctors; people who are obese, prefer doctors were either obese themselves, or have a reputation for empathy for fat people; could you count marathoners as a special group too? If they are a group with special needs, how much better would they feel if they got to consult with doctors who were marathon runners themselves? And more to the point, do they receive better treatment and a better outcome? Would an athlete involved in marathon running training who went to a doctor who was a marathon enthusiast himself actually see any difference in the way he was treated or diagnosed? There has really been no research that’s been done into this, and apparently no one knows.

But still, there is anecdotal evidence on the issue. There was a study done in Canada that polled about 4000 women doctors and found that it was the doctors who were at least somewhat involved in physical activities who felt comfortable giving advice to patients in exercise-related matters. They also found out that the physically active doctors had better, more useful words of advice for their patients. If the doctor is an athlete, he she is also more likely to not offer advice that is likely to irritate someone involved in marathon running training - such as to say that intense running like damages the knees, or that a person is not to be cleared for running unless he submits to a battery of tests.

But as it is with everything else in life, this isn’t a simple certifying test that can tell the good doctor is apart from the bad. There are many athletes who have had terrible experiences with athletic doctors, and good experiences with sedentary doctors. It all depends on the individual. As far as it goes, preferring an active athletic doctor to a more bookish one stands to some reason; the preference may not really bring on any benefits most of the time. It’s just the way one can open up with someone who undrstands. Doctors who are athletic themselves will be better aware of what it feels like to run; in the event of an injury, they will be able to sympathize with how difficult it is to just give up the sport until one heals. They could be able to better recommend an acceptable option.

Most doctors don’t really understand how truly dedicated athletes can be to their sport. It’s pretty easy for them to advice extended times off from sports when they don’t have that kind of insight into the level of dedication that goes into it. Consider a friend of mine who was in the middle of an intense period of marathon running training. At one point, she felt that she was losing strength, and breathing too hard. When she visited a doctor who wasn’t an athlete himself, he found out that she had a malfunctioning valve; he recommended that she do nothing about it, because she seems to be doing reasonably well as it was. When she sought a second opinion from an athletic doctor, he right away recommended that she come in for surgery. He saw that her triathlon times were down and he saw that she could never be as good an athlete as her potential allowed her. It takes an athlete to care enough to be able to ask the right questions.

Another marathon running buddy of mine who took the New York City Marathon in about 2 hours and 40 minutes, suffered from atrial fibrillation, a problem with the heart. Every doctor he saw, told him that he had no choice but to give up running altogether. An athletic doctor came up with better opinion though. He said that if he made sure that his heart rate was kept to safe levels, and as long as there was no chest pain, he had nothing to worry about. An athlete who has enough crazy dedication to keep to a marathon running training program is not an easy patient for a doctor to have. A patient like this has a quality to his dedication that is very rare. It would take an athletic doctor to understand the seemingly impossible demands of patients like this. A doctor who isn’t athletically inclined himself, would rarely understand the reason the patient had to worry about every little thing, things that would rarely matter to any other patient.

Knowing Where To Get Your Medical Advice On Marathon Running

June 27th, 2010

Successfully training for and completing a marathon is certainly about practice, stamina, fitness and running technique. But as any experienced marathoner would tell you, or even a podiatrist would, success at a marathon is all about knowing how to avoid injury, and healing well when (and not if) you get one. The organizers of the Boston Marathon a couple of months ago brought in sports medicine experts for debates and lectures on marathon running; the topic in particular this time was “The use of biomechanics to predict running injuries”. The expert podiatrist from a Harvard hospital who took the podium had an interesting and intriguing line of thought on injury management for marathoners - special stretching exercises are the key to injury avoidance and injury healing. If you learn how to stretch the right way, and if you learn to do it regularly, and if you learn to run the right way, you have the upper hand on the whole injury problem.

According to the doctor, the right gait for marathon running involves going forward with the heel striking the ground before the toes with each footfall. A gait in which a runner has his toes hit the ground first on each footfall, is just an invitation to injury. Simple changes in gait, muscle tension and warm-ups, are all that one needs to avoid running injuries, or to heal existing injuries. As demonstrably successful as the doctor’s theories are, the mainstream in sports medicine doesn’t really accept his opinions as scientifically sound just yet. One of the doctor’s most important injury prevention regimens involves a great deal of carefully orchestrated stretching. There are studies underway now trying to determine if the doctors stretching theories really hold water.

The doctor’s opinion about how to let your heel hit the ground first, is not usually accepted in the scientific circles. Scientists who challenge the theory argue that it depends entirely on how fast one is running whether it is the heel that should hit the ground first or the toes. Both kinds of gait are valid, they argue, depending on the speed at which the marathon running takes place. Seeing how there are such conflicting expert opinions on what constitutes the right running gait, where do marathon runners turn to for the best advice? Sports medicine is one of those exotic medical specialties where there is little regulation, and a lot of imagination at work. Any doctor with a vague grasp of sports medicine could start a sports clinic and call himself an expert. Sometimes, the only way a patient can tell if a doctor is any good is by how much of a wait there is at the office behind other patients. This is what choosing a sports specialist is reduced to usually.

Since there is so little regulation in sports medicine practice, it seems to fall to the athlete himself finding out what the state of the art is, in marathon running science. There are athletes who pore over websites by sports medicine authorities like the American College of Sports Medicine for the latest scientific coverage on the subject. People who don’t do all their homework, end up believing all the hype, and end up following fads that get them into trouble. Take for instance the shoe inserts they call orthotics that podiatrists design and sell. The podiatrists happen to make a lot of money on these accessories. Some sports medicine “experts” freely sell them to every patient, and ask that they wear them walking and running. This kind of advice can be murder on a marathon runner’s knees. When my doctor prescribed me orthotics for marathon running after a stress injury, I found that it made me impossibly slow; and then I pulled a hamstring.

Marathon runners can be especially vulnerable to incompetent advice. When a doctor authoritatively tries to change the way your gait is, or tries to change the length of your stride, you go and believe him. Gait changing training rarely works. A gait that is unnatural to you can actually leave you worse than before, and put your marathon running career on hold for a very long time.

Have You Cramped Through A Marathon Run?

June 24th, 2010

Okay, here’s one that you probably haven’t heard of before - if you are preparing for a marathon run, drink pickle juice to keep muscle cramps away. Now, this isn’t a joke. Actually, this is something that sport coaches have known in an informal way for some time now. Concentrated salty liquids will keep muscle cramps away. Walk into any marathon training camp, and you’ll see the pickle juice of theory at work - the trainers will be passing around the pickle juice regularly. It is so effective they say, that if you drink in some in the middle of a cramp, you can make it go away in seconds. They don’t really know why it works though. Traditionally, they’ve believed that it’s possible that all the sweat that you lose over marathon run gives you your cramps in the pickle juice replenishes it. That’s just a shot in the dark.

So they tried to test it out in a recent research study. They had experienced marathoners come in for the study. They set them all on exercise bicycles curiously modified to make them possible to pedal on only one side. The study was trying to get these athletes to sweat very hard; they cranked up the temperature in the room. The athletes exercised so hard and for so long, that they actually lost a couple of pounds of body weight to sweat in the time they exercised. You could say that they were dehydrated. And then they went and stimulated an artificial cramp. They took the leg that had received no exercise, and they stimulated the big toe with electricity to give each athlete an artificial cramp that lasted about a couple of minutes.

Now that the scientists know how long a each person was liable to cramp, they cranked up electricity all over again for a cramp; and this time, they passed around pickle juice. In lots of those marathoners, there was a dramatic improvement. It relieved the cramp right away, about a third as fast as water. For trainers who need to work on a marathon run, the cramp is an unending source of trouble. Scientists have never understood why it is that cramps come about.

It was easy for everyone to assume that a marathon run that makes you lose so much salt to sweat, makes your muscles spasm. This understanding has influenced sports drink design over the years too - they have lots of salt in them. This experiment shows though that the salt in pickle juice couldn’t possibly be mending their cramps. It takes time for whatever we ingest to be absorbed into the blood. These athletes wee seeing their cramps get better in a little over a minute. There must be something about the pickle juice other than salt. They believe now that there must be some kind of chemical in pickles that helps calm down the nervous system. When we exercise too hard, our muscles begin to lose their coordination - some pull while the others push. Doctors wonder if this is what could be happening through a muscle cramp. And chemicals in our vinegar and pickles do have a way with the nerves that could calm down the lack of coordination.

Inflatable boats - should you buy one

June 12th, 2010

Inflatable boats are quite popular now. There are different groups and types of inflatable boats and each is designed for a specific use. All can be equipped with different components and whatever equipment you want to add.

A small inflatable boat is the best way to get from your ship, if you have one of the big yachts or cabin cruisers, to shore. A medium sized inflatable is good for diving or swimming and many choices in this area. For recreational or some types of rescue operations there are some big inflatable boats available.

Custom built boats

June 12th, 2010

Most boats are built one an assembly line as this is the most efficient way to do it. Major benefit of assembly line production for companies is it keep the cost of the boats down. However it does make them all pretty much the same boat. Sure, there are a limited number of options but the options are, again, limited by using the assembly line process.

Now lets get out of the production boat area and enter the buying or viewing custom built boats. You can get several different ways a custom build boat is done. There are also amateurs building their own boats. Probably because that is the cheapest way to getting exactly what you want in a boat. If you don’t want to go to all the trouble of building your own boat the next step up is semi custom water craft.

Sanborn County, South Dakota Lakes Fishing Boats

June 11th, 2010

This is pretty much a no brainer but first you need to figure out what you want to do with your boat. Obviously the primary purpose will be fishing but what kind of fishing. Obviously if you are only going to be trolling you need a different setup on your fishing boats than if you are going to always be anchoring and sitting.

If you want to be a tournament fisherman, which can be quite exciting even in small local tournaments, you should consider a boat with a motor no less than 150 HP and probably shorter than 19 feet. For those of you who plan to fish on deeper water regularly you might find that a 200 HP motor and a boat at least 20 feet long or more will be ideal.

If you don’t plan on doing any tournament fishing but instead want to go after fish like bass, walleyes or crappies you’ll want a smaller boat. Perhaps in the 17-18 foot range with a minimum of 115 HP for the motor. With that boat you can enjoy it on lakes or rivers.

A Fishing Boat for Moody County South Dakota Fishing Lakes

June 11th, 2010

Finding the right fishing boat can be challenging but also a lot of fun if you are new to boating. If you’ve never bought a boat it can be a bit tough to find exactly what you want.

You should have some idea what kind of boat you want and where you plan to fish and what kind of fishing you will be doing, before you even start to look. If it’s the ocean it will be one kind and if it’s going to be mostly lakes it will be another. Seems basic but sometimes, as there are so many types of boats, it’s hard to tell exactly.

Having a hold is a great thing if you plan on cruising on the ocean or staying overnight in your boat. It’s a design that’s meant for rougher waters, riding the waves and does make the fisherman more comfortable.

Cruising Yachts on McCook County Lakes

June 10th, 2010

While a cruising yacht is a milestone for some people everyone likes the idea of a shiny new boat be it yacht or small fishing boat. Yachts are a bit expensive for most people and you shouldn’t spend more than you can afford. When you buy a yacht look at what comes with it and decide if it’s everything you want.

There are some different types of construction and most cruising yachts today are made of GRP(glass reinforced plastic) construction. In other words a lot of fiberglass and some other compounds. The real problem with this is osmosis as the blisters it leaves can be expensive to repair.

Buying a used boat to use on Marshall county lakes

June 10th, 2010

If you are going to keep a boat for a long, long time and you can afford it you should get a new boat. If you can’t afford a new boat or have doubts about owning a boat then for sure go buy a used boat.

While buying a used boat isn’t to glamorous it is a great decision for some people. The waterways and lakes are filled with people who have more money than average people and some will go way beyond what they can afford just to have a very fancy boat. Don’t do that and don’t get in over your head financially for a boat.

Costs of owning a boat

Boats normally will vary a lot in price from one manufacturer to another. Length and motor size ar two more things that can cause a big variance in price. However most boats can be bought for less than the payment on a new car.

Financing your boat your new boat is just like financing a brand new car or SUV. Much like home and car loans, boat loans have become a lot easier for most people to get. Payments are lower, terms are more flexible and payments can be stretched out longer. Take a look online to see what financing would cost and compare the rates with at least three or four other places to see what the costs of owning a boat are goung to be for financing..

How to skin a deer

June 6th, 2010

bear hunting

How to skin a deer is something you really need to know before you go deer hunting. The following instructions on how to skin a deer should get you started off in the right direction. It’s not all that hard to do but the easiest way to skin a deer is to have a friend do it for you.

While it may not be the most exciting job in the world, skinning a deer is important when returning from a hunt or when still actually on the hunt. If you have taken down the deer, elk, antelope or goat of your dreams in a hunting adventure, you will need to know how to skin the deer and how to get the most out of your kill. If you are just learning about hunting, this information will also be incredible handy for that remarkable day on which you will finally be able to skin a deer.

Bear hunting is becoming a controversial sport and this article is what I consider to be a kind of biased view of bear hunting. OTOH going to the local bakery and getting some of yesterdays donuts and pastries to bait bears with isn’t exactly a good image either. Personally I’d like to see that kind of bear baiting banned.

A Walk On The Wild Side: Ladies Like Hunting Too

May 30th, 2010

So you’ve spent the greater part of your life cultivating that delicacy and charm by which a woman expresses her femininity, does that mean you can’t don some camouflage pants, a hunting jacket, stylish but rugged boots, and pony-tail up your hair so that it wont get in the way of your scope as you aim your .50 caliber, muzzelloader at that beauty of a buck? Does being a woman mean you can’t enjoy game hunting? I think not, not if you love the feel of the earth beneath your feet, the wind in your face and the thrill of the chase and kill.

Kill and woman don’t go together, you say? Not if you accept that a woman cannot connect with that ancient instinct in all of us, man and woman, by which we humans first survived, the instinct to join in nature’s play and struggle, to settle the yearning in all of us, creatures of pursuit, stealth, and pounce, to grasp the trophy, the prey, the food of life. Yet it cannot be denied that this instinct belongs to woman as well as to man, and for some women, game hunting still calls like the song of a bird coming over a hushed lake, through the mist, unseen, yet awakening in her ancient memories what belonged to woman at the first, the heart of the huntress, what was in Diana of the forest, goddess of the hunt.

That instinct is still with woman today and modern game hunting, ethical, compassionate, still affords a woman the opportunity to feel the raw, wild nature that we should never forget, least we lose our roots in the world, and woman becomes a mere reflection of Madison Avenue’s specification for woman, all fluff and sweetness, color and shape, with passion only for man, money, and position on some corporate puppet stage. Even now, there are thousands of women hunters prowling the forest and fields, with husbands some, others with other women only (there’s a nice club to join), some alone. In our modern world, Diana still roams.

What do you need to start? As you might expect, the right clothes – bright colors so that other hunters will recognize you, camouflage when the hunt calls for it. Game hunting also calls for a weapon, but this doesn’t mean only shotguns or rifles. Archers with bow and arrow can also bring down the prize, and how good it feels to go back that far into our past! You can consult your local sporting goods store, and there are several good magazines on game hunting to point you in the right direction. You’ll also need to learn how to use that weapon safely and responsibly.

So, if you feel that calling some morning when the whitetails are bounding over the fields, the quail flapping above, the pheasants darting for the sky, instead of curling those lashes and brushing your locks, put on those boots, don that hunter’s cap, grab a shotgun, a rifle, and indulge your femininity. Woman as huntress. Viva human nature!

Getting Started With Boating

May 27th, 2010

At least one of the greatest things about boating is there are many different types of boats that are designed to do many different things. For most people a craft that can work as a fishing, water skiing, pulling tubes or just for cruising the lake is the best. A lot of them will do this.

So you need to focus and narrow down what you want. Ask yourself how you plan to use the boat most often. Perhaps it will be fishing or even racing. doesn’t matter if it’s cruising, skiing or other water sports. Narrow it down until you know. There is a boat that will work for you when you’re getting started with boating.

New boats and boating on South Dakota lakes

May 27th, 2010

So you think you want to own a boat. If you like being outdoors on the water boating is a great idea. They are more fun than most people can imagine. However boats are also more hassle than most people think they will be. That’s why you need all the information this site has to offer before you get any new boats.

Personally I’ve owned 12-14 different boats from small twelve foot aluminum fishing craft to a 20 foot pontoon you could pull tubes or skiers with. I’ve owned inboards and outboards, fishing boats and fast ones that you could pull three or four skiers.

My suggestions would be to figure out what you want to use it for, who’s going to be with you and how much you can afford to spend on a boat. The upfront costs are pretty clear but the cost of ownership does surprise some people at the costs or time for maintenance and for just using it.

How to test a boat

May 26th, 2010

When you believe you have found the boat you want it’s time to test it. Boat testing is more than just taking it out for a quick cruise. You need to look at everything closely just as someone who tests boats for a living would do. If you don’t know how to test a boat find someone who does and take them with you.

It can be really hard to tell a great quality boat or vessel from one that will have problems later. To a person new to boating or even someone with some experience both can look good on the surface of it but when you start to check everything out with a thorough inspection you should be able to tell a great boat from a not so great boat.

You can get a real good idea of the construction of the boat by opening all of the doors and access panels and taking a good look. If it’s a bigger boat check out the anchor locker because this is a spot where some people/companies really try to cut corners. If they have you will probably find them in this area.

Canned Hunting and African Safaris

May 26th, 2010

African safaris were made famous by Hemingway and the tradition continues to this day with African safari tours and even a lion safari can be had.

In one way or another, we have all had contact with the work or read about the life of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. We certainly don’t associate Hemingway with Africa hunting expeditions or wilderness.

Those who know a bit about the man have read of swashbuckling tales of drinking, bull fighting and hard living. We knew him as an avid sportsman who even penned one of his great books, The Sun Also Rises, around the annual running of the bulls in Spain.

Is canned hunting ethical?

In my opinion canned hunting isn’t ethical at all. Canned hunting is effectively trophy hunting a trapped animal. A canned hunt is a type of hunt that involves the hunter being promised a kill by a hunting agency or governing body.

The hunt usually takes place on the land that the host of the hunt, whether a hunting agency or private party, captures an animal and releases it in a generally enclosed area to be killed by the hunter. The enclosed area tends to be a small secure area so that the kill comes rather easily to the hunter.

Beginning bass fishing lures

May 26th, 2010

Fishing lures are used to catch fish and the lure you use will depend on what kind of fish you want to catch. Freshwater lures are available in an endless variety of styles, colors, sizes, and types.

The purpose of a lure is to catch fish, however some say odd colored or weird lures are designed to catch fishermen. The type of lure or jig someone chooses is usually based on previous experience, preference, or what the local bait shop says.

Fishing lures are generally stored in Fishing tackle boxes having a bunch of small open compartments on top, over a large compartment that is the bottom of the box.

You don’t have to know about every type of freshwater fishing lures. There are just to many to deal with at once, particularly if you are a newbie to fishing or just beginning.

Just bass lures alone come in may different types. Poppers, chuggers, spinner baits, twister tails, plain jigs, skirts and more. That’s just bass lures, not walleye lures, lake trout lures, muskie lures, brown trout lures, brook trout lures, tube lures or other freshwater lures that are available for you.

Had enough yet as that doesn’t include minnow shaped lures or diving plugs, let alone the choices of wooden, steel, plastic or rubber and natural, like feathers or hide. Check out the rest of the beginning bass fishing lures article now.
