Learning MMA is the best workout you can get

January 23rd, 2010

MMA is one of the world’s fastest growing sports. The term stands mixed martial art, and is a fighting form that combines the best of boxing and wrestling, with eastern martial arts like Karate and Jiu Jitsu. If you want to learn mma, you have to have basic skills in fighting both on the ground and standing up.

Boxing and wrestling are the most common backgrounds to have before you start a professional MMA career. Many of the best MMA athletes have been college champion wrestlers, and some have been professional boxers. But, just knowing one of these skills won’t take you far. As an example, if you put a boxing heavyweight champion of the world in a ring or octagon with an average MMA fighter, the champion boxer would be defeated in probably less than a minute, 9 out of 10 times. That’s how different the two sports are.

Learning skills like MMA means that you have to train in a variety of martial arts. Most have their base in boxing and wrestling, as I mentioned, but many (if not more) come from BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). BJJ can be said to be one of the forefathers of mixed fighting. The Grazie family adapted the Japanese style Jiu Jitsu to mimic real-life fighting, and it has proven to be very effective over the years. This is a great sport to start training if you want to learn mma.

You might think that MMA is too barbaric for you, but that might not be the case. Joining a boxing, wrestling, or BJJ, club for beginners means that you will be coached alongside other beginner students just like you. The sparing is often moderated so that it is light and nobody gets hurt. It can be great fun, and is one of the best workouts you can get!

May 23rd, 2009

Hollywood is known for creating incredibly life-like creatures through its use of computer-generated images, amazing reproductions of eras long since past and other special effects that leave the viewer spellbound. But sometimes, Hollywood has to rely on actual terra-firma to set the tone and backdrop for their features. This is when California film locations are needed.

Today, it’s easier than ever for fans of certain films to find the California film locations used in their favorite movies. And when you discover where these film locations are actually located, you may be surprised. For instance, did you know that the houses used in such horror classics as A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween are only two streets away from each other?

There are thousands of California film locations in and around the Los Angeles area. The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills has been used in many different films and television programs, from National Treasure: Book of Secrets to Gilmore Girls. The Biltmore Hotel is another famous Los Angeles film location. It’s been used in such films as Ghostbusters, A Star is Born, Pretty in Pink and many others. And then there’s other, less-glamorous California film locations like the convenience store used in the comedy, Superbad or Shia LeBeouf’s home in the thriller, Disturbia. All real buildings, homes and businesses, and all real California film locations!

If you’re a fan of Hollywood movies and you want to see for yourself where some of your favorite scenes were filmed, visit FiveStarFilmLocations.com. We have thousands of Los Angeles film locations listed in our comprehensive database. Or, become a part of the movies yourself by submitting a property you own for consideration as a California film location. Not only will your home or business be featured in a potential blockbuster, but you’ll be paid by the studios for the right to use your property! Martial Arts

May 7th, 2008

Martial arts is something that is turning from a hobby to a lifestyle, and people are starting to notice this trend as a way to cure the aliments of the mind, as well as the body. While many people realize the physical health benefits of practicing martial arts is the same can not be said for the benefits martial arts provides for the mind. While the answer is not yet clear as to why people struggle with understanding that martial arts is good for the mind as it is for the body, one thing that is clear is that people will truly understand it once they give martial arts a try.

Honor Integrity and Discipline in the Martial Arts

November 25th, 2007

Class began and I asked the students how their journals were coming along and not a single one of them had written anything…most hadn’t even begun the journal. That really got me thinking about the integrity of the martial arts and the honor and discipline involved with being a martial artist. What has happened to these qualities? White Crane Kung Fu

September 4th, 2007

If you are interested in taking a martial art then you should look at the art of Kung Fu.  It is the original of the original, but there are many forms of kung fu and you need to know about all of them.  They all share basic moves and terminology, but differ at the advance levels.

A White Crane Kung Fu master will reveal the same delicate movements. He or she stands very still, waiting for an opening. Then, with lightning fast speed, he or she will strike, just like the crane does a fish. This delicate movement and lightning fast speed is the trademark of White Crane Kung Fu. It’s not an easy martial art to master but once it is, the practitioner is a force to be dealt with.

In order to understand what Shaolin Kung Fu is, it is important to understand the environment that bred this type of Kung Fu. The Shaolin temple was established during a period of time in China when individual regions were controlled and dominated by warlords. In addition, law and order was based upon the survival of the fittest and as such the different areas were replete with killers and thieves.

Boot Camp for Out of Control Kids

May 31st, 2007

Every parent would love to have the perfect child but sadly this is not the case. Many kids today are troubled and resent parental control. In today’s poor economy most parents work outside the home which gives the kids too much time to get into trouble. If you find yourself facing a situation that you can’t seem to deal with you might want to consider boot camp.

Boot camp and out of control kids have seemed to find favor with each other in recent years. Boot camps provide a structured environment where the kids are not allowed to do as they please. Some boot camp descriptions compare the camp to a military boot camp because of the rigorous schedule. Physical conditioning and discipline are usually a big part of boot camp protocol.

Karate Secrets and the Offensive Thrusts

April 27th, 2007

This is the most frequently used striking point. However, it can only be mastered after constant practice and training. When properly executed toward the right pressure points, the Clenched Fist can drop your opponent for the count of ten- and out! Do not be fooled into thinking that the Karate Clenched Fist blow is as easy as it looks. Be sure to study the illustrations. Notice that the forearm and the knuckles form a perpendicular line. Notice also that the front of the fist and the top knuckles form a 90° angle. In order to carry the maximum striking power from your body, thru your arm, and to the fist, that line must be straight.

karate

Even though your adversary is 50 lbs. heavier, 5 inches taller, with broad shoulders and a Rock of Gibraltar stature, you can knock him out . . . perhaps with one smashing blow! That is why even an experienced Judo man is afraid to “lock horns” with a good Karate man. (See Fig. 1 & 2)

Who is a Bully?

April 18th, 2007

Who is a bully? First of all, people who bully are often people who have (often secretly) low self-esteem and they turn to bullying to hide their perceived inadequacies. They do this by pointing out inadequacies in other people and trying to get people to fear them.

Bullies often also look for ways to avoid responsibility for their actions or have simply never been taught that there are consequences to certain actions. Often times they are clever enough to avoid being caught by anyone who might force them to face the consequences.

They also lack empathy which means they are unable to see the true effects of their behavior on other people, such as so-called “mean girls” who use their relationship powers to control, exclude and otherwise torment others in terms of relational issues. In addition, they are good at creating conflict between other people and like to know that they have the “power” to force others into a conflict and then they like to sit back and watch it play out.

Lose Weight and Exercise Right

April 16th, 2007

The only way to make you lose weight exercise really stick is to be fanatically dedicated to losing weight. This means that you must live every day as if weight loss were your most important priority. You have to start going to the gym at least three times a week and doing both cardiovascular and weightlifting exercises. You have to eliminate junk food completely from your life, not even snacking on it on special occasions. Your lose weight exercise must be complemented by a good, healthy diet.

In my opinion, you should avoid fad diets altogether. Maybe some of them work, maybe some of them don’t, but there is one thing that we all know: a good, sane, healthy diet works for everyone. All you have to do on top of your lose weight exercise is to eat lots of vegetables, a fair number of grains, and only healthy fats. You don’t have to cut out fat entirely – if you use olive oil and other vegetable oils, you should be just fine. Perhaps you won’t lose weight quite as quickly as on the Atkins diet, but you will be much healthier.

Martial Arts and How To Get Into Shape!

April 11th, 2007

The combination of the physical and the mental creates a spiritual whole. Bellevue martial arts instruction has a goal of enhancing each student’s ability to draw on their most basic energy–their Chi–to drive their every thought and action. Ultimately, that’s what the true Way of the Warrior, and real Martial Arts, are all about.

In the special martial arts academy at Bellevue martial arts school, students study the ancient martial arts system, combining the five animals, the Dragon, Tiger, Snake, Crane and Leopard. The curriculum is described as a blend of northern and southern Chinese Martial Arts styles. The same well-established program is taught in several Martial Arts classes across the United States and in Canada, as part of a well-developed, interlocking system.

Exercise and Martial Arts - How to Train

March 29th, 2007

For those who want to take up aerobic exercise, but have not been active for a while, you should make sure you take your time and work up to it. If you try to do an hour of aerobic exercise right of the bat, you could really hurt yourself. You want to start out with very short workouts and then add times to your routine as you go along. Start out with just five or ten minutes of  exercise and then stop once you start to feel like you can’t go on. You will want to push yourself beyond that point in the future, but when you start, you want to get your body use to the idea of exercising again before you do so.

Cardio Exercise

March 17th, 2007

Getting and staying active can be a struggle for many people. This is particularly true of people who work day in and day out for eight or ten hours a day. By the time the weekend rolls around, all they want to do is sit inside and rest. Cardio exercise doesn’t have to be a chore, in fact there are many forms of cardio exercise that are incredibly fun and easy to fit into the busiest of lives.

Swimming is one such example. Getting in the warm water and swimming a few lengths of the pool is fantastic cardio exercise. Many local pools actually open early in the morning for folks who want to get their exercise in before their workday. All you need to do is get up an hour early, head to the pool, swim your laps and take a shower. It’s an easy and effective form of cardio exercise.

Why Train Martial Arts?

March 11th, 2007

There are so many reasons why training martial arts is a great activity for people of all ages, but I’m just going to tell you about five of them here. The best part about these reasons is that they apply to children and adults and everyone in between.

Discipline. We all know what it means and we all need more of it. Martial arts is known for its ability to create discipline in adults and children. This discipline comes in the form of focus, concentration and respect all skills taught through training martial arts. Anyone who trains martial arts need to be able to focus and concentrate on what they are doing so that they do not injure themselves or those around them and this concentration and focus carry over to other parts of their lives - work, home and school. Another aspect taught through training martial arts is respect of others. Put these together and you have someone who has the discipline to get done what needs to get done.

Long Lost Manuscript Resurfaces With The Well Kept Secrets Of A Judo Teacher!

March 8th, 2007

With the rapid expansion of interest in judo throughout the world today, there has developed a need for a textbook on the art and science of this sport: a textbook to be used as a reference and guide for schools, instructors, students, and the general public. The terms jujitsu and judo are common to our knowledge, but the difference in their meaning is not too clear.

Judo is a derivative of jujitsu and is the correct term used to refer to that art in today’s language. The word judo specifically explains the truer meaning of the art as it is practiced today. The ju part of the word means “gentleness” or “giving way” and implies a flexibility of techniques, while the do part means “way” and signifies the application of the ju principle in the execution of the techniques, not only in the physical exertions of the judoist but also in his mental attitude. The older jitsu, which was replaced by do, meant “technique” or “art.”

When Dr. Jigoro Kano developed judo from its original martial art form, he wanted something more than skill in technique. He theorized that what was needed was a blend of the finer techniques of jujitsu with a form of mental training or philosophy as its driving force. Do or “the way” therefore came to signify the mental training that the judoist needs in order to make practical use of the judo philosophy in personal contacts, daily experiences, and career relations. In other words, judo teaches the maximum efficient use of mental and physical energy.

Who Else Wants To Win Every Judo Fight? With These Judo Techniques You Can!

March 6th, 2007

First we shall learn two methods of falling, and then a simple throw that will enable you to practice the commoner fall. The various ways of falling are known as Breakfalls. (”Ukemi” in Japanese.) These must be mastered before any throwing is attempted.

1. The Backwards Breakfall

Begin by lying on your back, feet together. Look at your belt, so that the back of your head is lifted slightly off the mat. Cross your arms over your chest. Now, with both arms, slap the mat at the sides of your body, swinging the arms loosely like a whiplash, not stiffly. The palms of the hands should face the mat on striking, so that the elbow joint is turned to the side, but the blow should be made with as much of the arm as possible, not just with the palms only. The position to strike is at an angle of 45 degrees to the body. If you are closer you will run the risk of falling on your arm when thrown; if farther away, you will risk injury to the shoulder. First, practice getting this slap hard, vigorous, and at the right angle, remembering to keep looking at your belt. When the arm has struck the mat, it should be allowed to bounce off with its own force.

Why Every Child Should Study Martial Arts In School

March 1st, 2007

Martial arts helps reduce stress, it improves concentration and control and it teaches respect of others. In this sense, it also helps children who are bullied because it gives them the confidence they need to combat bullying before it even starts.

Just think about the change in society if everyone had martial arts as part of their daily lives. We’d be more physically fit, but we’d also have a greater sense of respect towards one another as well.

However, if you’ve ever tried sculpting that perfect body, you come to realize it’s more difficult than you were led to believe. This difficulty can be ascribed to the lack of core strength. Self Defense: Your Different Options

December 22nd, 2006

Both men and women need security in this world of danger. In big cities, it lurks in shadows and around corners constantly.  Every day we hear of violent attacks against the elderly and women. To secure themselves, some people take self defense classes, which can prove to be time consuming and expensive. Others carry guns, but those can  be as dangerous as the brutes they are meant to defend against. One defense, however, that people might count on when used properly and in the right situation, is Mace Spray For Self Defense.

What Type of Training Equipment?

December 18th, 2006

Back in high school I loved Kung Fu and Karate. If I was not going to Kung Fu or Karate class, I was training at home with some great karate equipment. One specific tool that I used on a regular basis was called the Flexmaster. It was more or less a flexibility machine. You would sit in it and crank your legs apart in order to get a good stretch. I used to sit in that thing for 30 minutes at a time, slowly increasing my flexibility. I have to say that it worked rather well. I finally got to where I could do the splits. This meant for range for my kicking techniques. Anything from perfect jump-side kicks, to leaping splits, to jump spinning hook kicks were possible. That was probably my absolute favorite piece of karate equipment.
