How to skin a deer

June 6th, 2010

bear hunting

How to skin a deer is something you really need to know before you go deer hunting. The following instructions on how to skin a deer should get you started off in the right direction. It’s not all that hard to do but the easiest way to skin a deer is to have a friend do it for you.

While it may not be the most exciting job in the world, skinning a deer is important when returning from a hunt or when still actually on the hunt. If you have taken down the deer, elk, antelope or goat of your dreams in a hunting adventure, you will need to know how to skin the deer and how to get the most out of your kill. If you are just learning about hunting, this information will also be incredible handy for that remarkable day on which you will finally be able to skin a deer.

Bear hunting is becoming a controversial sport and this article is what I consider to be a kind of biased view of bear hunting. OTOH going to the local bakery and getting some of yesterdays donuts and pastries to bait bears with isn’t exactly a good image either. Personally I’d like to see that kind of bear baiting banned.

Canned Hunting and African Safaris

May 26th, 2010

African safaris were made famous by Hemingway and the tradition continues to this day with African safari tours and even a lion safari can be had.

In one way or another, we have all had contact with the work or read about the life of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. We certainly don’t associate Hemingway with Africa hunting expeditions or wilderness.

Those who know a bit about the man have read of swashbuckling tales of drinking, bull fighting and hard living. We knew him as an avid sportsman who even penned one of his great books, The Sun Also Rises, around the annual running of the bulls in Spain.

Is canned hunting ethical?

In my opinion canned hunting isn’t ethical at all. Canned hunting is effectively trophy hunting a trapped animal. A canned hunt is a type of hunt that involves the hunter being promised a kill by a hunting agency or governing body.

The hunt usually takes place on the land that the host of the hunt, whether a hunting agency or private party, captures an animal and releases it in a generally enclosed area to be killed by the hunter. The enclosed area tends to be a small secure area so that the kill comes rather easily to the hunter.

Turky Hunting and Quail Hunting

May 25th, 2010

Now that the spring turkey hunting season is nearly upon us, you should find the right shotgun. As turkey hunting has become increasingly popular, more and more manufacturers have developed shotguns that have more features. There are a few things you need to keep in mind as you search for the perfect shotgun.

You need to buy a shotgun that fits you. The only sure way to find a shotgun that properly fits you is to make an appointment with a firearms expert.

Quail hunting is one of the top sports for those on the upper crust of society. It’s considered the top hunt for the aristocracy and is practiced by vice presidents (don’t quail hunt with VP Cheney tho) and world leaders to this day. Quail hunting is considered this way because it demands a lot less of the hunter in comparison to other hunts.

It doesn’t take place in the morning, for example, or in the shivering cold. Instead, quail hunting can be done in relative comfort and can actually be quite stylish. For this reason, many people in the upper class of society try quail hunting.

Successful Turkey Hunting in South Dakota

May 24th, 2010

One of the most popular ways to hunt turkeys is with a bow and arrow. It is a tradition in North America that relies on turkey calling and making the perfect shot. There are many agencies and organizations in place that either want to put a stop to turkey hunting or those that support the tradition of turkey hunting.

Like most warring factions, these two groups will stop at nothing to continue with their ideals. One can’t typically pick a side on the issue of hunting without knowing the issue itself. It is important, to get as much information on turkey hunting as possible to make an informed decision.

You can hunt turkeys in the spring and in the fall but you need a permit or license if you are going to hunt turkeys. The spring and fall permits, however, are different. The spring permit allows you to hunt in a specific area during one of the 5-day turkey hunting periods but this varies by state.

In the fall, your permit will enable you to hunt any day during the season, as long as it is within the zone listed on the permit. Once again this does vary by local state turkey hunting laws so check the laws in your area.

Succesful turkey hunting takes a lot of patience. Spring hunting involves less patience, as you make hen turkey sounds to try to get a gobbler to come to you. Turkeys don’t mate in the fall, though, so you will have to patiently engage in stand hunting. Stand hunting involves finding a spot and then waiting for the turkey to come to you.

Snow goose hunting and hunting rabbits

May 23rd, 2010

A federal snow goose stamp is not required and in SD you can shoot 20 snow geese per day with no possesion limit. For the cost of a license you can pretty much eat goose year around because there are sure a ton of them around waiting to be shot. Altho snow goose hunting wsn’t great this spring, due to the weather, the fall season should be excellent.

Lots of people have been planning this years snow goose hunts since they left last year. The geese are plentiful and it’s great to hear about something that isn’t endangered for a change. Heh, now if they’d make the limit on deer about 10.

For many people, hunting rabbits is cruel and unusual punishment. For others, however, hunting rabbits is an age old sport that requires patience and skill. This article will speak to the latter while paying no mind to the former.

Realizing that the rabbit hunt is as old a tradition in America as hunting other animals and acknowledging that, while hunting may not be necessary in any modern context, it is a heck of a lot of fun.

Most people choose to hunt rabbits with a dog. This is because using a dog can help bring the rabbit out into the open or can help draw the hunter towards the area in which the rabbits are more plentiful.

Nature friendly hunter and tree stands hunting

May 21st, 2010

The nature friendly hunter motto is: Leave the woods the same as when you came or better. Well, minus an animal or two of course. If you are going to be camping overnight, try to disturb as little of the environment as possible.

Don’t clear brush unnecessarily. Try to envision your trip as an overnight stay at someone’s home. You are a guest in the habitat of many animals and some you aren’t even aware of.

Always bury your campfire to ensure that it will not reignite and cause a full-blown blaze in the wilderness. Check your fire several times before leaving the area.

Most deer hunters are now hunting from tree stands. If you are new to deer hunting, or if you have been hunting for a while but have yet to use this tree stands hunting method, you should consider using a tree stand.

The benefits of using a tree stand are that you will stay out of the deer’s range of view, you will keep your scent hidden from the deer, and you will increase the range of your view. You do need to take certain precautions, however, to make sure that you protect yourself.

Hunting and disease and hunter survival tips

May 15th, 2010

There are many possibilities for hunters to get sick. Many critics consider these aspects to be nature’s defense mechanisms towards human interference. Whatever the case may be, care must be taken when outdoors to avoid these hunting and disease problems.

Just a little poison Ivy or Poison oak is more than enough. While this article is about disease you may get I don’t think that dangerous plants can go unmentioned. Know what you are walking in and how to recognize dangerous plants in the area you plan on hunting.

Hunter survival tips will help you when you need help. Sometimes it’s easy to lose your way in an unfamiliar wood. Carrying a compass and maps of the general area that you will be hunting in can help in the event that you get lost.

Carry a flashlight with extra batteries in case you get caught out after dark. There are also flashlights on the market now that operate by just a shake, eliminating the need for batteries.

Matches in a waterproof case are essential and a sharp knife is good to have as well. A traditional Bowie or a Swiss Army knife both serves the purpose.

Hunting history and hunting first aid

May 12th, 2010

First Aid For Hunting Safety
Hunting can provide opportunities for many types of injuries. Being prepared is your best defense against disabling injuries or even life-threatening accidents. Knowing some basic hunting first aid and using common sense when in the wild can save both life and limb.

If you don’t know CPR, learn it. Call your local hospital, EMS, or fire department to find out when and where you can attend a community CPR class. You never know when you may need to perform CPR on a friend, family member, or even a stranger. A few hours of your time could save a life someday.

Man has been hunting animals such as deer and buffalo for the purposes of food, clothing and shelter for a very long time. Hunting actually predates the civilized world as we know it today and there are many archaeological discoveries that confirm this fact in hunting history.

An Asian spearhead has been carbon dated as being over 16,000 years old and there is some evidence that we used larger game as food as much as 2 million years ago. That doesn’t seem likely to me but I suppose it’s not impossible. Archaeologists think it’s the case, tho.

Gun safety and hunting safely

May 11th, 2010

One of the first fundamental laws of hunting safety is to always treat the gun as if it is loaded. This is a universal guideline for gun safety as it does not refer to any actual type of gun. In terms of having a gun in general, one should never assume that it is unloaded.

One should never be fooling around with a gun or wave it around, point it at others or work carelessly with it. There is always the possibility something could occur giving the odds of a dangerous incident more chance to happen than necessary. Instead, simply treat the gun as if it is always loaded.

In regards to gun safety, it is important to be responsible and keep the gun unloaded until it is ready for use on the hunting grounds. This avoids any injury or death due to the gun accidentally going off due to careless use or due to improper storage. Just one of many hunting safely rules always to be followed.

Try to return home as close to your planned time as possible. If you are late checking in, your contact person can then know to set out using your directions to see if you need assistance.

Take the time to prepare your weapon. If using a rifle or shotgun, clean and inspect the weapon after every use and after any time the weapon has spent in storage.

Prepare a small first aid kit to carry with you while you are hunting. Consider bringing your cell phone. You can always keep it turned off while you are hunting, and a phone can be the difference between life and death in a medical emergency. Always be prepared to give detailed directions to your exact location as you move through the woods.

Hunting tips for firearm safety

May 10th, 2010

Basic Tips on Firearm Safety For Hunters
Every year, hundreds if not thousands of hunting accidents happen across the country; just ask Vice President Dick Cheyney. Most of these would not have happened if people had just practiced a few basic gun safety techniques.

Read your firearms owner’s manual from cover to cover so you thoroughly know your gun. You should also practice taking apart your shotgun or rifle and inspect it thoroughly.

If you learn to do that and what your weapon looks like normally, it will be easy for you to recognize any abnormalities of the gun in the field. If you get clumsy drop your weapon or fall with it it, immediately take it apart and check it for damage. Make sure that the slide and everything else operates smoothly. If you have any doubts about your shotgun or rifle, don’t fire it.

Your hunting rifles, shotguns and pistols are very dangerous so please read these hunting tips for safety in the field.

Hunting has survived even tho we have gotten modernized and no longer have to rely on hunting skills to eat. It has become one of the worlds most popular pastimes and hobbies. However hunting can also be one of its most dangerous. Every hunter should have some basic knowledge before heading out into the field.

The most important tip I know is never hunt when you are intoxicated or drinking. The next most important hunting tip is about how to walk and carry a gun. It is important to make sure that the muzzle of your gun always points away from you and any others with you. There are many ways to do this.

Hunting Dogs and Hunting Tips

May 6th, 2010

Hunting dogs are certainly the best possible ally of the hunter, as they sniff and scavenge for prey in the deepest and darkest brush of the forest. There are many different possibilities for a hunting dog type that you can take on your next trip.

The type of dog you should take on your hunting trip should be directly related to the type of hunting you are planning on. If you are planning on hunting fur-bearing animals, for example, you would be more satisfied with a hound than you would be with a terrier.

The most common main category of hunting dogs is the hound. Hounds are actually divided into two categories from there: the sighthound and the scent hound. As their names imply, each sub-category of dog type refers to a certain skill that the dog tends to be more proficient in.

This hunting tips page of the hunting SD site is for misc items and interests that don’t fit well anywhere else on the site. Everything on this page will be hunting related, whether it be books, equipment or even a friendly site or hunting site with information you might be able to use.

The one thing I can tell you is these are all reliable sites and the hunting information will always be above average. If you see something about hunting you think others might like send me an email or post it on the hunting forum.

Best Rifle for Whitetail Deer Hunting

May 5th, 2010

Picking the right or best rifle for deer hunting is very important because it can make or break the hunt itself. You never know what problems may arise from having the wrong rifle at the hunt, so ensure that you have taken the time to pick the best rifle for deer hunting or whatever other big game you may be hunting.

There are a number of areas that should be explored as you try to figure out the best rifle for your hunting. As you grow as a hunter and learn more, you’ll be able to make your own decisions in terms of picking a rifle your hunting. For now, however, it is likely best that you consider an expert opinion.

Whitetail deer and deer hunting are a dangerous topic in some places but not in South Dakota. Hunters love deer and want to be able to hunt them. Non hunters love deer and don’t want hunters to hunt them. Small problem when the two groups meet. Truth is whitetail deer hunting should have a higher limit because deer cause so many accidents they really need to be thinned out.

Whitetail hunting in SD is almost always good, every year. I see so many dead deer laying alongside the interstates it makes me thing a guy should just put his hunting stand at the edge of the cornfield by the interstate.

Eastern SD is whitetail hunting mostly altho a mule deer will get lost and be found in the eastern part of the state and sometimes into Minnesota. Mule deer hunting takes place in Western SD and there is a lot of western South Dakota public hunting ground for your hunting trip.

Duck and goose hunting

May 3rd, 2010

South Dakota goose hunting has been good for years now. The first year I lived in Lake Preston, SD I was amazed at the numbers of geese and ducks flying overhead for days at at a time. Fall migration of waterfowl from Canada filled the sky with more flocks and birds than I could have ever counted. South Dakota goose hunting is great in both the fall and the spring.

SD has a spring goose hunting season for snows, blues and ross’ geese. The 2010 spring season for snow geese is from February 13, 2010 through May 2nd and again this year the hunting is expected to be excellent. Snow goose hunting has been excellent for more than a few years now and daily limits are common.

Spring goose hunting is as good as fall but no Federal waterfowl stamp is required. It’s a special goose season to thin out some of the snow and blue geese due to their ruining their Canadian habitat from over population.

Duck hunting is a lot of fun and waterfowl hunting is one of the more popular hunting sports in the world. Duck and goose hunters are a pretty social group, on the whole and it’s as much a social calling as it is a hunt. If you’ve ever been to a Ducks Unlimited banquet you know what I mean. If you haven’t been to one I highly recommend you go.

Waterfowl hunting has a culture all its own and even has it’s own dress code. If you aren’t dressed right your buddies are going to laugh at you. Of course it also helps you stay concealed while in or out of a hunting blind. Warmth is also important so be sure to get good hunting clothes. It’s hard to hunt when you are shivering.

You can also wear what you’d wear goose hunting as it’s almost the same sport. Some think waterfowl hunting is not a sport but I totally disagree with that and so does most of South Dakota. It’s a very hunter friendly place and has some of the best, duck, goose and pheasant hunting in the world. SD loves hunters.

South Dakota pheasant hunting

May 2nd, 2010

If you are interested in South Dakota hunting around the Watertown, Brookings, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Huron, Madison or Lake Preston areas you should check out this hunting board. You can post your good or bad luck hunting, ask questions about hunting from our knowledgeable members and find what areas have been hot lately or what areas they expect to be hot.

There are abundant pheasants in the area and the Lake Preston DeSmet area is on of the major duck and geese flyways in the area. Pro guides bring their clients to this area to hunt and pheasant, ducks and goose success is phenomenal most of the time. Toni at the Lake Preston motel or Bo from the Bait Box in Lake Preston can tell you where it’s best.

Pheasant hunting in the Eastern part of South Dakota should be even better this year than it was last year. There have been a couple of easy winters in a row and a lot of reproduction the last couple of years. It looks as if 2009 pheasant hunting will be better this year than last year.

Driving from DeSmet SD on highway 25 South to interstate 90 I’ve seen more pheasants this year than I did last year and there were a ton of pheasants along there last year. It wasn’t uncommon to see flocks of 20-40 birds at once.

I’ve also seen a lot more between Lake Preston SD and Brooking SD on highway 14 than I’ve ever seen before. Same from Lake Preston to Madison SD on highway 81. There are just a ton of pheasants in the area so South Dakota pheasant hunting will be excellent again this year..

Betting On Greyhounds For A Living

February 6th, 2009

Can you actually make a living betting on greyhounds? The answer is yes with the right tools. Even though there are no jockeys to steer the dogs, greyhound racing is more predictable because there are only 6 or 8 runners, the going (ground) is consistent unlike horse racing, and the different grades mean the dogs are all of a similar standard … usually.

If you can predict which dog has the right draw and and the early pace to lead the others round bends one and two, you’ll regularly pick winners, as 65% of races are won by the dog that leads at the first bend. Other sectionals are obviously important, but none are as important as the first sectional.

Using sectional timings to consistently pick race winners is therefore the way to make a regular income. Analysing sectionals though for every race is virtually impossible. To do it you need a piece of greyhound racing software like the one I use, it’s called “Sectional Timings”. It uses 5 years of greyhound results data to analyse the chances of each dog in a race. It will only advise dogs on any day that have a stand out chance of winning, meaning they meet the systems set criteria for winning dogs.

It won’t pick the winner every time, but it does the majority of the time!

You can read more about the system I use for selecting winning greyhound racing tips here.

Fishing Tips for boys

June 27th, 2008

There are many kinds of fishing equipments in stores, numerous fishing methods in books, and fishing advices online. To make it all simple, here are the basic things you need to know for your first time fishing adventure.

1) How to fish with bait

* Tackle. To plunk the bait, you should purchase lead weights. The weight of the lead would vary depending on the current of the environment. Anglers commonly use and recommend bank sinkers with a number-two hook.

To avoid sinkers to slide, you would need a swivel to act as a stop. To protect the knot, you could use plastic beads between the swivel and weight. Using two appropriate swivels could allow you to rig the sliding sinkers.

* Bait. The commonly used bait for all kinds of fishes is worms. Another popular bait is chicken liver. Remember to buy fresh bait and keep them cold to avoid them from getting soft and allowing the bait to stay within your hooks.

Some of the commonly used baits are cut-baits which include skin from fried chicken, fish entrails, grasshoppers, salmon eggs, shrimps and crayfish tails.

Best Spots on Lake Erie for Great Walleye Fishing

June 13th, 2008

Some of the best spots on Lake Erie for great walleye fishing are located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The most popular spot in Ohio is the Toledo shipping channel. You have to travel out a few miles to reach the channel were the walleye seem to be in abundance, but it is worth when you bring back some nice sized fish. The best way that most anglers say they hook the walleye is by trolling the waters in the shipping channel. The channel has some good fishing, but if you want something a little closer to the shoreline, you might try a few other hot spots.

Where are the fish

June 5th, 2008

There are many factors that need to be considered to determine where you will find certain fish is oxygen. All fish must have a certain level of oxygen to survive. Some fish, such as carp, survive on less oxygen than fish like trout. The living plants within a lake or stream directly affect the amount of oxygen in the water. They add oxygen to the water through photosynthesis. This process uses sunlight to make food. Oxygen also makes its way into water from the surrounding air. Further tips and guides about Sport fishing including bass and ice can be found at fishing.sportyworld.net.

Contemporary fishing rods do not resemble the primitive cane poles and which can easily retrieve the fish caught in its bait with the aid of the reels in its rod. Some of the fishing rods sport sophisticated movable shafts that can move except handle and can make it easier to catch a struggling fish caught on snare bait. The basic design of a fishing rod has remained unchanged. It is thick at the handle (bottom) and tapered and thinner at the tip to make it flexible and provide it handling stability.
