When you have gained a bit of confidence from baby stepping, it is time for you to try propelling yourself over the ice alone. To keep your confidence high the first exercise is a two-foot maneuver called double sculling (Illus. 5). Beside taking you across the ice on your own, this will teach you the vital part your knees play in making your skates glide.
Stand with your knees straight, heels together but toes turned out so that your feet form a V (5-1). Now bend your knees and allow your feet to slide out diagonally forward, keeping your weight evenly balanced between your feet and on the back center of each skate (5-2). When your skates have slid a few feet apart, straighten your knees and pull your toes together (5-3, 4). As your skates are about to touch, slide them parallel and side by side in a short forward glide before starting the sculling movement all over again (5-5). The scull itself is done on the inside edge of both skates, but be sure you do not “drop” your ankle over to the inside. Only by keeping your ankles firm, will your skates move easily ahead. By repeating these sculls in the same rhythm, you will find you can work up real speed across the ice. Be sure this speed comes from the bending and straightening of the knees and not from the pull of the inner thigh muscles above rigid knees. For the propulsion that comes from the proper use of your knee is the secret of the pushoff onto one skate which is next in the order of learning.

For those who want to take up aerobic exercise, but have not been active for a while, you should make sure you take your time and work up to it. If you try to do an hour of aerobic exercise right of the bat, you could really hurt yourself. You want to start out with very short workouts and then add times to your routine as you go along. Start out with just five or ten minutes of exercise and then stop once you start to feel like you can’t go on. You will want to push yourself beyond that point in the future, but when you start, you want to get your body use to the idea of exercising again before you do so.

It was the summer of 1997 and my best friend, Erik, and I were bored to death. After 20 years in the same town, there is only so much exciting left to do. It was time for a change. This is when Erik suggested airsoft paintball guns. I told him we should find the nearest paintball range and have a blast. After a quick flip through the yellow pages, and it was done. This was going to be a day we would never forget. After arriving at the site and paying the fee, we received padding to wear for protection and a couple of sweet airsoft paintball guns.

Can golf be good for your health? Absolutely! The United States Golf Association believes this as they advise that when you play a round of golf, you walk the golf course if you can. Riding in a golf cart should be avoided, if at all possible.
Golf courses want you to ride a golf cart to play the course, as they want to get as many rounds played in as short an amount of time as possible. They also get more revenue from renting the cart to you. This is business, but their business does not help your health. Walking the golf course gets your heart pumping and circulates blood throughout your whole body. This is great low level cardiovascular exercise.

Most of us have to take what we get, but if you have a choice, and you have enough boys out so that you have to cut the squad, select your personnel as follows:
(1) Size (2) Speed (3) Shooting (4) Intelligence (5) Competitive spirit.
This is the era of the “big” man in basketball. Most of the successful teams in the country, both on a collegiate, as well as high school level, have had the tall boys helping them. However, the place is still available for the little man in this era of giants, if he can get the job done. He can do this by playing big, that is, mastering the fundamentals of shooting, dribbling, passing, and having that competitive fire that enables him to earn his place on the court. As I said, it is true that most of the good teams have big men, it is also true that over the years most of the outstanding teams have had at least one good little man. The U. of Kentucky is a good case in point. Year after year Kentucky has a little guard to spark them.
On a high school level, I can point out any number of good little men in Illinois who have left their mark on the hardwoods. Bill Ridley, 5′9″, of Taylorville, and the University of Illinois; Ron Zagar, 5′10″, of Depue, and the University of Iowa; John Easterbrook, 5′9″ of Champaign, and the University of Illinois; Dick Box, 5′10″, of Herrin, and the University of Wisconsin; Stan Albeck, 5′9″, of Chenoa, and Bradley University. Other great little men include Don Hennon, 5′9″, of the University of Pittsburgh;

Each position has its own peculiar requirements. The first baseman has to learn things no other player need bother about. Ditto the shortstop, catcher, pitcher, or out-fielder.
There are a number of points about catching and throwing the ball, however, that apply to all players. A fielder, for example, should always try to use both hands when making a catch. The hands should “give” and be “soft” when the ball strikes them. If the ball is being received above the waist, the thumbs should be together with the palms facing the ball, fingers spread and pointing skyward. If below the waist, the little fingers are to be together with the fingers pointing to the ground. Whenever possible, the ball should be caught at shoulder-height, so that the fielder can throw without loss of motion.
Proper movement of the hands, however, represents only one part of the fielding technique. To make a good, clean catch a player must get to the ball and, if possible, receive it in front of the body at a point that is in line with the middle of the body. This means the fielder must move his feet!
On balls that are not very wide of a player’s position, the “boxer’s” step can be used. This involves shifting one foot to the side and closing with the other so that when the ball is received, the feet are at the width they were before the ball was hit or thrown. It’s quick step right, close left, step right; or step left, close right, step left.

Putting is half your score! Do you think it’s important to work on?
If you’re like me…you avoid the practice green. I get so bored so quickly! It drives me nuts to stand over putts and try to make them. I know this may sound “off the wall”, since the ball has to go in the hole to make a good score, but I would rather watch a drive go LONG and straight than putt anyday!
Anyway, I’ve come up with an 8 minute putting routine that I do a couple of times a week, and it’s lowered my score by 3 strokes. That’s pretty cool! Didn’t even work on my swing to do it.
Check out these tips for a putting practice routine and check out some other golfing tips while you’re at it.

The most important difference between summer and winter camping is the necessity, in winter, of maintaining warmth. For a short time before the winter camper turns in, a wood fire built on green poles laid on the snow, or the small gasoline cook stove in the tent, will make available some heat; but by and large, both on the trail and in camp, the human body must produce sufficient heat to maintain normal temperature. If the interior body temperature drops two degrees, intense shivering results, further lowering of temperature produces sluggishness and coma, and finally, at somewhere between 70° and 75°, death ensues.
We must then consider the human body as a heat-producing machine and determine (1) what can be done to increase the amount of heat manufactured by the body, and (2) what can be done to conserve this heat.
Production of body heat.—A normal male adult at rest, as in sleeping or loafing, liberates approximately 50 calories of heat per hour. This can be increased appreciably by eating or by exposure to cold. The only other means by which skiers may increase heat output is muscular action.
Violent exercise will increase heat output as much as sixteen times.

I would regularly go to the gym and get a cardiovascular workout, do strength training exercises, and in general do everything to build my body up. I always loved it. It did not even seem like a sacrifice of time to me. It was more like exercising, while having fun anyways. I never thought that I could not only make money by being a personal trainer, but also could help many people to achieve success and have a fit body. Personal training courses are great.
